There is a big movement in African countries for greater gender quality. That makes sense on a number of levels of course, every industralized country in the world offers some sort of significant gender protection for women in the work force.
After talking to the owners of the best wine club in South Africa, it is clear that African countries, much like the wine industry in California, have a ways to go.
It’s amazing to think a high end industry like wine, has some of the same gender issues as the least developed continent on Earth-but it is true. In Africa, less than 20% of college grad’s are women whereas the wine industry in California has about the same amount of winery owners, vineyard managers and winemakers who are women.
